Sonoma County Rock Fest?

I want to gauge the opinion of the many subscribers to this page in regards to the future. As I have stated in the past I wanted to try and get some sort of show in courthouse square. I was thinking why not turn it into a Rock Fest of sorts, kinda an annual thing. A Sonoma County rock fest to call our own. The way I see it is starting small in the beginning but growing it every year. I want this to be an event that bands from the bay area and beyond would like to perform at as well. This will be a place for local bands to show their stuff in middle of downtown. This is a grand idea but the main issue is Funding. I, personally cannot afford to do this myself. This show would definitely need sponsors and financial support. We would need help with raising funds for this show in addition to help with permits and planning. I was looking towards August to possibly do this as it will give ample time to plan and promote. Possible locations would be Courthouse Square in downtown Santa Rosa or the amphitheater at the fairgrounds (after the fair has ended). Cost of renting the amphitheater is listed as $2000 for one day (the Grace Pavillion is $500 cheaper) and currently costs for Courthouse square are unknown other than the permit costs which is around $80. Comments would be greatly appreciated as we can use all the input that we can get on this. Spread the word on this as we want the local community to embrace the event. Should we try and move forward with this idea and have something tangible to keep the rock community alive?

Should we try and move forward with this idea and have something tangible to keep the community alive (Daniel)

Are you getting used to not having The Fox?

If you said no, then I urge you to get more involved.  The only way we’re going to get Rock back on our airways, is with the commitment from the community.

The Community MUST demand it!!

Do you demand it?!?  Show us!!!

Social Media is only going to get us so far. That includes better participation in our rallies. Increased calls to businesses that purchase advertising with Maverick Media.  Use the updated script.  It’s also time to increase the amount of letters in our arsenal of weapons.  Letters to businesses that advertise with Maverick Media. Letters to both corporate and local headquarters.  Letters to your local newspaper editor for the “opinion” sections.  Press Democrat, Argus Courier, SF Examiner, Any and all that are available in our market.

We should also write letters to the companies that are supporting us.  Yes, write, not call.  I’m sure they’ve been called enough.  I say write a letter from the heart.  Tell them how much you appreciate them pulling their ads from Maverick Media. Tell them how much Rock means to your daily life.  This is also good material to write to the newspapers.

About Us

After 20+ years on the air, Maverick Media pulled our only Rock station 101.7 The Fox from the airways.  At 12 noon on March 24, 2011, without any prior notice, the rock station we knew as 101.7 The Fox, turned into Hot 101.7.  It later came out that staff was notified at 11:00 am, and the format changed one hour later.

Appalled by this decision and lack of being informed of the change in format, many dedicated Rockers united together to protest against Maverick Media.  The Facebook page called BringBackTheFOX was created by Daniel Mills, and co-administrated by Rich Gravelle, Ben Hawk and other dedicated fans of 101.7 The Fox.  Soon after, an online petition was created and quickly attained over 1,300 signatures within 24 hours.  That Facebook page now has over 1,800 members and the online petition has over 2,200 signatures.

A boycott of all Maverick Media radio stations (Hot 101.7, The Mix 104.9, The River 97.7, and KSRO 1350 AM) was implemented and a list of businesses that advertise with the new Hot 101.7 was created. Dedicated Rockers began (and are still) calling these businesses to plead with them to pull their ads from Maverick Media and go with any other broadcast station. Please see the script and list of businesses to get involved.

At first, the Bohemian was the only online newspaper to print anything regarding the change in format. The first protest was scheduled for March 25th at 4:00 pm.  With the help of the administrators and members of the Facebook page they were able to recruit 60-80 people to attend the protest.

On Friday March 25, 2011, a blog, written by Beki Berrey, was posted on her Wild Child Gone Good site and posted to the Press Democrat’s Facebook.  A writer from Press Democrat contacted Beki Berrey and informed the writer, Chris Smith, about the protest planned for later that evening.  Chris Smith attended the protest and wrote a story that was published at 6:25 pm to the Press Democrat Online.

Since the initial protest/rally, a rally has been scheduled each Friday since the change. Please check the calendar for the next scheduled rally. The goal is to get Rock/Metal back on the radio in Sonoma County.

This website, which is a work in progress, was created a few short days after the change in format in order to reach those that were not on Facebook.  Two businesses, Cybersyzygy Web Design and David Mercer Monsulting, dedicated to the cause came together to assist with the initial web design and provide the hosting for free. The Website’s logo was designed by Cameron Kennedy.

This website is to be used as a tool to Bring Back The Rock Back To Sonoma County. To the left is an Events Calendar of local shows and the rallies.  To the right are the Recent Posts and drop-down menus, one for specific Category of post and one for archived posts. Please browse all the menus to find ways to get involved and be informed about the crusade to get Rock/Metal back on the airways in Sonoma County.

Rock will be on our radios again!

We will forever remember and cherish the memories 101.7 The Fox gave us.

Why Bring Back The Rock?

Hard-rock Fox goes mellow

The sudden mellowing of Sonoma County’s last hard-rock radio station, The Fox 101.7, prompted a Facebook-organized uprising Friday that drew about 60 chanting protesters to the sidewalk outside the studios of Maverick Media.

Daniel Mills, organizer of the Bring Back the Fox campaign on Facebook

“Bring back the Fox!” shouted the crowd that gathered at 4 p.m. on Neotomas Avenue, off Farmers Lane.

The demonstrators objected to Maverick’s unannounced switching of The Fox, a 23-year-old rock standard, to a Top 40 format that features pop artists like Britney Spears, Pitbull and Pink.

“We’ve got some people upset. It was to be expected,” said Kent Bjugstad, manager of The Fox and Maverick Media’s other Sonoma County stations — KSRO, Froggy 92.9, The River and Mix 104.9.

He said he feels bad to have changed the format of a station with a passionate following, but said The Fox’s audience has been declining for years.

Hard-rock radio stations are losing ground across the country, and a local market survey found greater interest in Top 40s music targeted at listeners 18 to 34 years old, he said.

On the sidewalk Friday afternoon, protest organizer Daniel Mills, who’d created a Facebook page for people seeking to save The Fox, said there is more at stake than just the rock station.

He said The Fox played an important role in giving local bands some air time, bringing heavy metal and other hard-rock bands to Railroad Square’s Last Day Saloon and promoting such performances at Phoenix Theater.

It pleased Mills, 27, that the Facebook campaign drew a crowd to Maverick Media’s door only a day after The Fox became Hot 101.7

“Pretty much what happened here is social media at its finest,” he said.

Script and List of Businesses

Send this to company emails. Use it as a script when contacting by phone. Its polite, and straight to the point.

Dear _____,

My name is ____ , and I am contacting you on behalf of the fans of 101.7 The Fox who are outraged at the change in format from rock, to a Top 40 station.  The fans of the former rock station have initiated a boycott of anything related to Maverick Media. Also, each Friday since the change in format, the fans of 101.7 The Fox have rallied in front of Maverick Media’s offices to get rock back on the radio.   We do plan to continue rallying against Maverick Media until Rock is picked up by another station.

I am asking that you that you join us in our mission and pull your advertising from Maverick Media or risk losing the business of thousands of loyal Fox fans. In just several days an online petition to restore the fox has been passed around in the Social Media community and already has over 2,200 Signatures to bring rock back.

Please seriously consider your decision, as we are choosing not to associate ourselves with companies who continue to advertise with Maverick Media.

Thank you for your time and consideration and please enjoy the rest of your day. If you would like more information regarding this mission, please visit our website: www.bringbacktherock.com

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Once you have success!!

Once you get a business to cancel with Maverick Media inquire to see if they would be willing to sponsor and support the creation of a new station.

Would they advertise on this new station??  The ultimate goal is to get Rock/Metal back on the airways.

Once you have success!!

Once you get a business to cancel with Maverick Media inquire to see if they would be willing to sponsor and support the creation of a new station.

Would they advertise on this new station??  The ultimate goal is to get Rock/Metal back on the airways.
